VARARO

“..The oldest document referring to the locality dates back to the year 846, in which Vararo appeared with the name Varai. The name Vararo presumably derives from the Celtic word ‘VAR’ meaning water. The presence of numerous springs and the former existence of a small lake (Lake Moro) make this a likely hypothesis …‘’¹

Vararo and its inhabitants have remained isolated over the centuries.

The ring of mountains that surround it, its elevated position and the lack of communication routes with Laveno and Valcuvia, all contributed to this prolonged isolation. The construction of a rolling road in 1917, connecting Vararo with one of the nearest centres (Laveno and Cittiglio), partially put

and end to Vararo’s isolated state and facilitated the movement of goods and people to and from the locality. ‘…

The area’s forests, together with its grazing lands, were the people of Vararo’s main assets. Wood, grass and chestnuts collected from the common grounds were vital for the subsistence of local farming families…’ ¹

Once a purely peasant village, today it has become a tourist centre.

‘Vararo e i suoi abitanti sono rimasti isolati nei secoli. La cerchia dei monti che lo racchiude, la sua posizione elevata e la mancanza di vie di comunicazione con Laveno e la Valcuvia concorsero a tale prolungato isolamento. La realizzazione di una strada rotabile nel 1917 che ha unito Vararo con uno dei centri più vicini (Laveno e Cittiglio) ha parzialmente risolto il problema di isolamento e spostamento di merci e persone da e verso Vararo.

‘’…Il patrimonio boschivo, unitamente alle zone di pascolo costituiva per la comunità di Vararo il bene primario. La legna, l’erba e le castagne dei fondi collettivi erano infatti essenziali per la sussistenza delle famiglie contadine del luogo…’’ ¹  Un tempo strettamente contadino oggi è diventato un centro turistico.
